October Potluck Get-Together!

This Sunday, October 9th, your Friendly Neighborhood Humanists will be gathering to eat together and hang out. If this sounds like your sort of thing, then come join us! We’ll be at the River Rock Apartment Clubhouse at 382 Cherry Street, located on the corner of 4th and Cherry, next door to the “Hot Worx” fitness center. The event begins at 5:00pm, and we’ll try to have someone outside the door to let people in for about 15-20 minutes before and after that time.

If you’re able, then bring a dish or a beverage to share. If you aren’t able, due to time, financial, or logistical constraints, then don’t worry about it. We usually have plenty to eat, even if a few people only bring an appetite. We usually have some vegetarian options, as a few of our members are non-carnivorous, but more are always welcome.

Whoops! Bike Ride Cancelled (for now)

Thanks to the Ironman triathlon happening downtown this weekend, our bike ride was previously rescheduled for the next weekend, but it turns out that the Chattanooga Pride parade and related events will be occupying pretty much the same place that weekend. Our city, it turns out, is just too full of other fun stuff to do.

So, for the time being, our previously planned bike ride has been cancelled, pending a better date.

Saturday Scholarship Support!

Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges, is holding a “virtual 5k” this Saturday, September 24 called the Scholar Dash. This event raises Golden Opportunity scholarship money which is used to help more students accept PTK membership.

Some members of the Chattanooga State Community College chapter of PTK are registered for this event and plan to meet together on Saturday morning at 9am to walk the 5k distance on the riverwalk right behind our campus. They are inviting any other faculty, staff, students, and community members to join! No need to officially sign up for the event — you can just come walk or run with us for some company and conversation.

When: Saturday, September 24th at 9:00am

What: A casual morning walk (or run) with members of the community and campus.

Where: Participants will meet at covered pavilion #2 which is behind the OMNI building (directly across from OMNI entrance K) on Chatt State’s campus. Parking is available right next to the pavilion.

If you DO want to officially sign up for the 5k (which earns you a tshirt and pin!), you can sign up at this link: https://changelives.ptkfoundation.org/event/scholar-dash-2022/e398133

Be sure to select Tennessee Region as your team to join!

If you can’t join in person, but want to support the Chattanooga campus chapter with a donation, you can follow these links to donate.

It’s looking like Saturday will be a beautiful fall day to get out and enjoy the riverwalk. The event will begin at 9am!

See You Later, Meditator!

Our Secular Meditation group has moved its start time going forward. Instead of starting the virtual meeting at noon, the group will now be meeting (virtually) at 12:45! This is great news for anyone who always wanted to join, but needs to schedule around Sunday brunch, and/or sleeping in late!

If you have never joined our weekly meditation group, and you’d like to, contact Rich Worth at rtw@taylorworth.com or Pat Lavin at pflavin@epbfi.com for more details.

Do You Remember?

We’re meeting again in September!

This Sunday, on the 11th of September, we’ll be gathering once again to eat and drink and be… well, human. Being merry is encouraged, but optional. Now that I come to think of it, so are the eating and drinking.

SO!! If you are interested in eating AND/OR drinking AND/OR merriment, then come on down to the River Rock Apartment Clubhouse at 382 Cherry Street, located on the corner of 4th and Cherry, next door to the “Hot Worx” fitness center. The event begins at 5:00pm, and we’ll try to have someone outside the door to let people in for about 15-20 minutes before and after that time.

If you’re primarily interested in eating and drinking, then bring a dish or a beverage to share. If you are more interested in the merriment, maybe bring a friend, or two, or even three! Sometimes more really is merrier!

July Cycling Trip

A group of humanist homies from the very young to the very old, and all ages in between, will be setting off once again from the Wheland Foundry Trailhead at 1503 Middle St at 9:30 am on Sunday, July 31st. Our jaunt should take us along the river to the Bluff View Arts District, where we stop at Rembrandt’s Coffee House for a little refreshment before returning to where most of us parked our cars.

Rental bikes are available at the trailhead, and battery-assisted e-bikes can usually be found along the route somewhere, for those of us less athletically inclined.

Our previous ride at the beginning of July (Technically our “June” trip) was the best-attended one so far this year. These things are a lot more fun with more people, so if you’ve not come along on one of these before, now’s the time to give it a try!

Our July Potluck Get-together is Almost Here!

Our regularly occurring monthly in-person get-together is about to happen again! Meet up with us in the clubhouse at the River Rock apartment complex on Sunday the 10th of July, to talk about whatever’s on your mind.

Where?: The “River Rock” Apartment building on the corner of 4th and Cherry street. The door is on Cherry, to the left of the sign that says “HOT WORX”. We’ll be in the nice, comfy common room, around the corner from the fitness center, with a nice view of the swimming pool. The address, for GPS purposes, is 382 Cherry St.

When?: 5pm, July 10.

What? A potluck dinner, and a chance to meet new friends, or catch up with friends you already know.

Who? You, hopefully! This sort of thing doesn’t work unless people show up.

Why?: Because we like you!

How? Well, that’s up to you. Cook up a culinary masterpiece, if that’s your jam, or just pick up a bag of chips or a beverage to share. If you can’t bring anything but your happy self, that’s all right too. We’re pretty good at sharing.

Potluck Gathering Sunday, June 12!

Chattanooga Humanists will be once again meeting to eat and drink and be merry at the River Rock apartment complex on 4th and Cherry Street downtown from 5-7 PM on June 12th.

The get-together will be in the building’s “Clubhouse”, between the fitness center and the swimming pool. The entrance isn’t particularly well-marked, but it’s next door to a fitness center with a big sign that says “HOTWORX”. if you see that sign, you’re in the right place.

Bring a potluck-style dish, or at least an appetite, and come hangout with us as we share our thoughts, our stories, and of course, our food.

If you can find a metered parking space, those are free on Sunday. If you can’t find a meter, there is plenty of paid parking available nearby. If anyone wants to save transit costs or parking costs by carpooling, reach out to info@chattanoogahumanists.com and we will see what we can arrange.
